Background of the Study

Electoral malpractice undermines the foundations of grassroots democracy by compromising the integrity of the electoral process and eroding public trust (Okeke, 2023). In Awka South, irregularities such as voter intimidation, ballot stuffing, and result manipulation have raised serious concerns about the legitimacy of local elections (Ibrahim, 2024). These malpractices not only distort democratic representation but also hinder the development of effective governance and community participation (Chukwu, 2023). This study critically appraises the various forms of electoral malpractice in Awka South, examining their causes, manifestations, and repercussions on grassroots democracy. It explores the role of systemic corruption and external influences in compromising electoral integrity, aiming to propose measures that strengthen transparency and accountability at the local level (Adeyemi, 2023).

2. How do these malpractices affect grassroots democratic processes?

3. What measures can improve the integrity of electoral practices?

Research Hypotheses:

2. There is a negative relationship between electoral irregularities and public trust.

3. Strengthening regulatory frameworks improves electoral integrity.
